The first manned mission to the moon was sent aboard Apollo 11 in July 1969. This marked a historic event in which Neil Armstrong became the first-ever man to step on the moon. The mission was a huge success followed by 5 successful manned missions till 1972. A total of 12 people has stepped on the moon along with a couple of unmanned spacecraft. The moon missions helped in expanding the domain of knowledge of mankind.
But the question which often arose in our minds is that why hasn’t NASA gone back to the moon? There have been a lot of radical explanations pertaining to the same. So, today we will discuss some of those explanations-
1. Decrease In The Expenditure of NASA
Since the last manned mission to the moon in 1972, there has been a significant decline in the share of NASA in the US budget. It has declined from over 2-3% to near 0.5% of the US budget. Due to the decline in the budgetary share, NASA hasn’t been able to implement most of its plans. This could serve as the answer to the question that why hasn’t NASA went back to the moon.
2. The Shift Towards Unmanned Probes
Unmanned spacecraft and probes are less expensive and also help in the exploration of distant planets and asteroids over longer journeys of time. With greater ease. Missions like Curiosity on Mars, JUNO which orbits Jupiter, CASSINI which orbits Neptune, NEW HORIZONS spacecraft which studied Pluto, etc. have helped in the extensive study and analysis of these alien worlds. These missions help in the preservation of the precious life of astronauts by protecting them from the dangers of outer space.
3. Political Problems
In a recent phone call with NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine with reporters when asked the question “WHY HAVEN’T WE WENT BACK TO THE MOON?”, he answered that “If it wasn’t for the political risk, we would be on the moon right now. In fact, we would probably be on Mars.” Planning these missions requires a large share of federal cash. Something, the governments are very reluctant about. Because of this lack of political will, NASA was not able to implement it’s planning in an orderly state and delaying the plans for future space explorations.
There have been various sightings of aliens all over the world. Also, there have been various hoaxes by conspiracy theorists suggesting that the US Government has been influenced by the presence of aliens because of which they haven’t returned to the moon.
There are a lot more radical explanations as to why NASA hasn’t gone back to the moon. But the Trump administration now aims to send the humans back to the moon by 2024 along with the ARTEMIS program and soon to Mars. They aim to set up human habitation centers across the moon and mars which will be fully independent of any help i.e. they will be using the materials present to support their life.
But would humanity be able to achieve its long lost dream of going to the moon and live in an alien world? Will we be able to do it? Let us know what you think about it in the comment section.
