Get ready to witness the most fascinating astronomical event of 2021. On Thursday, June 10, people across the northern hemisphere will have the chance to experience the Annular Solar Eclipse. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Watch this video for the complete visual explanation of all physics facts –

What is the Annular Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon scoots between the Earth and the Sun. They align in such a manner that the moon obstructs the path of light coming from the Sun. Due to this phenomenon, the light coming from the Sun does not reach at some areas of Earth. It casts a shadow on those areas. During an annular eclipse, the moon stays far from the Earth (Apogee). Due to the distance of the Moon, it appears smaller than the Sun in the sky. This also means that the Moon would be unable to block the entire Sun. From Earth, it appears that a smaller disc is placed over the Sun. The outer edge of the Sun remains visible. This creates a view that looks like a bright ring around the Moon. This ring is called the “Ring of Fire”.

Where will it be visible?

Some parts of Canada, Northern Russia, and Greenland will experience the annular Solar eclipse. Viewers from Northern Alaska, Europe, Northern Africa, Asia, and the eastern United States will experience a partial solar eclipse. The duration of the annular part will be 3m 5s long, while the eclipse will last for 5 hours. It will start from 08:12:20 UTC till 13:11:19 UTC. In India, it will start at 01:42 PM(IST) to 06:41 PM(IST).

How to watch?

Because this is not a total solar eclipse, you should not be careless. Looking directly into the eclipse can cause severe damage to your eyes. So please take proper precautions before watching it. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses are not safe for looking at the Sun. You will need special eclipse glasses or other tools. You can also use a pinhole projector.

NASA had made a video in which you can see the real-time in your local area when this annular solar eclipse will occur.

The only thing left is to pray that the weather stays in our favor!

If you are not able to see the annular solar eclipse then don’t worry. Here you can watch the ring of fire live.

June has a lot going on this year including the Milky Way that will dominate the June night sky in the Northern hemisphere. We are going to mention all the important astronomical events of June 2021 that are about to happen. Grab your binoculars and head out to see the wonders of the night sky this June.

June 1 – Closest approach of the Moon and Jupiter

Before dawn on 1st June, we would be able to spot Jupiter and the Moon very close together. The distance between them would be only 4°37′. It would be easily visible because the moon will make it easy to spot the pair in the constellation Aquarius. The two gas giants Jupiter and Saturn were moving towards each other last year and now they are sliding apart from each other.

June 10 – Annular solar eclipse (Aka Ring of Fire)

Annular solar eclipse (Aka Ring of Fire)

This is the biggest astronomical event that is about to happen in June. Many parts of the world will be able to witness this annular solar eclipse. Because of a thin ring of sunlight around the Moon’s edge, It also called the ‘Ring of Fire.’ The moon will come between the Earth and the Sun creating a spectacular fiery-looking site in the sky. It will be visible across the parts of Greenland, Northern Canada, and Siberia. The upper Northern hemisphere also will be able to see the partial eclipse. The full eclipse path will start at 9:49 UT over Northern Canada and ends in Russia at 11:33 UT. Don’t forget to put eye protection throughout the whole experience.

The longest day of the year above the equator will be on the 21st of June. It is often referred to as “summer solstice”. It marks the shift in seasons and it is celebrated in many ways. It’s the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere or the “winter solstice”.

June 24 – Strawberry Full Moon

Look towards the South East just after the sunset to watch the full moon rise gently above the horizon. It will reach its peak at 2:40 IST and 18:41 UTC. It is called the strawberry full moon after the wild strawberries that start to ripen during this month. Other names of this full moon are Rose Moon, Hot Moon, and Mead Moon.

June 27 – The Peak of The June Bootids Meteor Shower

June Bootids Meteor Shower

June bootids are also known for being extremely long meteors. Though each year, the meteor hunters skip the June bootids because of their typical Zenith hourly rate which is 1-2 per hour, this meteor shower is unpredictable. It is known to have showered a burst of up to 100 meters per hour in some years. The last burst was in the year 1998. Don’t miss it because it might happen in 2021.

Apart from these events, the mighty Galactic Center of the Milky Way is also visible during June. You can take advantage of the New Moon to capture the galactic center of the Milky Way shining in the night sky.

These were the most important astronomical events of June 2021 that you should not miss. Take the advantage of the summer season and witness these beautiful wonders of the night sky!
