Pavel A. Cherenkov (15 Jul 1904 - 6 Jan 1990)

Pavel A. Cherenkov (January 6 in physics history)

Pavel Alekeyevich Cherenkov was a Russian physicist. He discovered Cherenkov radiation in 1934. It is a faint blue light emitted by electrons passing through a transparent medium when their speed exceeds the phase velocity of light in that medium. It is extensively used in experimental nuclear and particle physics. He even shared the 1958 Noble prize for Physics.

Discovery of Foucault's Pendulum: A device demonstrating the Effect of the Earth's Rotation

Leon Foucault

The rotation of Earth was proved by Leon Foucault in 1851. He used a steel wire 2 meters long with a 5 kg brass Bob. He made the pendulum in such a way that it was freely permitted to oscillate. He observed that it’s plane of oscillation slowly rotated relative to the ground. He made this discovery at 2:00 am working with his pendulum.
