July 5 - Births – Physicists born on July 5
William John Macquorn Rankine (5 Jul 1820 - 24 Dec 1872)
He was a Scottish engineer and physicist who developed methods to solve the force distribution in frame structures. He was one of the founders of the science of thermodynamics. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1853. He worked in the field of manual of applied mechanics, thermodynamics theory of waves of finite longitudinal disturbance, and manual of the steam engine.

G. Johnstone Stoney (15 Feb 1826 - 5 Jul 1911)
He was an Irish physicist who called attention to a minimum quantity of electricity at the Belfast meeting in 1874. He wrote, “I shall express Faraday’s Law and the following terms for each chemical bond which is ruptured within an electrolyte, a certain quantity of electricity transverses the electrolyte which is the same in all cases.” He coined the term electron for this minimum electric charge. This name was applied to the particle, that was identified by J.J. Thomson, which has streams of negative particles in the cathode ray tube.
Clyde E. Wiegand (23 May 1915 - 5 Jul 1996)

Issac Newton Published The Principia
On this day, Isaac Newton published The Principia in 1687. The original was written in Latin. Newton gave an insightful mathematical analysis of the relationships between motion, force, and time. He gave the law of universal gravitation law and the famously known three laws of motion.
The First Apollo Orbital Mission
The first Apollo orbital mission, an unnamed Apollo test flight was launched at Cape Kennedy. It made 4 orbits at an altitude of about 113 miles and the AS-203 mission successfully evaluated the performance of the S-IVB unit stage. It was designed for lifting humans to the moon.
The Invention of The Junction Transistor
Dr. William Shockley announced the invention of the junction transistor in 1951, on this day. It was a three-layer sandwich and the outer layers were made up of semiconductors with too many electrons. This junction transistor was superior in every way.
