April 29 in Physics History - Births – Physicists born on April 28

Harold C. Urey (29 Apr 1893 - 5 Jan 1981)

He was an American scientist who discovered deuterium which is a heavy form of hydrogen. For his discovery, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1934. He also contributed to the development of the atomic bomb and the growing basis for the theory of what was widely accepted as the origin of the earth and other planets. With Stanley L. Miller he created the effect of lightning in a prebiotic atmosphere of Earth with an electrical discharge in a mixture of hydrogen, ammonia, methane, and water. This simulation produced a mixture of aldehydes and carboxylic acid and amino acid. Urey was also able to calculate the temperature of ancient oceans from the number of certain isotopes in fossil shells.

Marietta Blau (29 Apr 1894 - 27 Jan 1970)

She was an Austrian nuclear physicist who developed the photographic emulsion technique for the study of nuclear disintegration caused by cosmic rays. She wrote her thesis on the absorption of gamma rays in 1919. She was the first to used nuclear emulsions to detect the neutrons by observing recoil protons. Even Albert Einstein recognized her as a very accomplished physicist and he helped her to continue her career in Mexico City.

Henri Poincaré (29 Apr 1854 -17 Jul 1912)

He was a French physicist, mathematician, and astronomer who worked in the field of cosmogony, topology, and relativity. His Poincaré Conjecture states that if any loop in a given three-dimensional space can be shrunk to a point, the space is equivalent to a sphere. He also studied electricity, telegraphy, capillarity, thermodynamics, quantum theory, and cosmology. He was also a co-discoverer of the special theory of relativity. He was often described as the last universalist in mathematics.

Forest Ray Moulton (29 Apr 1872 - 7 Dec 1952)

He was an American astronomer who collaborated with Thomas Chamberlin and suggested that the filaments of matter were ejected when a star passed close to the Sun. These matters pulled into tiny solid fragments called “planetesimals”. They also suggested that over a long period of time grains collided and stuck together from larger bodies. The formation of protoplanets started when the gravitational force of attraction accelerated in the larger bodies.

Jean-Marie-Constant Duhamel (5 Feb 1797 - 29 Apr 1872)

He was a French physicist and mathematician who proposed a theory that dealt with the transmission of heat in crystal structures. This theory was based on the work of Siméon-Denis Poisson and Jean-Baptiste-Joseph.

William Henry Eccles (23 Aug 1875 - 29 Apr 1966)

He was a British physicist who was an early proponent of Oliver Heaviside’s Theory. The theory stated that an upper layer of the atmosphere reflects radio waves and enables the transmission over long ranges. Henry coined the term “diode” and studied atmospheric disturbances of radio reception. He also contributed to the development of electronic circuits that included the “flip flop”.

The Rubber Patent

Thomas Hancock’s first patent was for the application of rubber in clothing. He showed that elasticity was useful in braces or slip-on boots. He also invented a “masticator” which produced a homogeneous mass of solid rubber. This solid rubber was suitable to make various articles. Eventually, he became the founder of the British rubber industry.
