Hermann Carl Vogel (3 Apr 1842 - 13 Aug 1907)

Hermann Carl Vogel (April 3 in Physics History)

He was a German astronomer who discovered double-star systems that were too close for the individual stars to be notices by any telescope, also known as spectroscopic binaries. He studied the light received from distant stars and also introduced the use of photography in the field. The distant single stars were founded to be two individual stars circling each other.

Virgil I. Grissom (3 Apr 1926 - 27 Jan 1967)

Virgil I. Grissom (April 3 in Physics History)

He was an American pilot and astronaut who was the second American in space (1961) and one of the original “Mercury Seven” astronaut trainees. He also was the first Gemini pilot which was launched on 23 March 1965 with John W. Young. He first flew in space on 21 July 1961 in the Liberty Bell 7. During splashdown, due to some malfunctioning, the escape hatch blew prematurely but he managed to escape. He died in a fire that broke out while testing the Apollo I capsule in 1961.

Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni

Also known as the “father of acoustics”, he was a German physicist.
He investigated sound waves by measuring
the speed of sound in various gases using an organ pipe which was filled with different gases. He determined the pitch of the organ pipe. He analyzed the nodal pattern in standing wave vibrations in long rods to determine the speed of sound in solids. He showed the Chladni figures to an audience of scientists in Paris in 1809. These complex patterns were generated when thin plates covered in the sand are set in vibration.
