Franz Xaver von Zach (4 Jun 1754 - 2 Sep 1832)

He was a German Hungarian astronomer and the director of the observatory near Gotha. The first Congress of astronomy is organized by him with Joseph Lalande. He formed a group of 24 astronomers to track down the missing planet between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter in the last years of the 18th century. They discovered the asteroid belt while searching for the missing planet. He edited 28 volumes of Monatliche Korrespondenz zur Beforderung der Erd-und Himmelskunde.

Lloyd Viel Berkner (21 Feb 1905 - 4 Jun 1967)

He was an American physicist and engineer who first measured the height and density of the ionosphere. This led to a complete understanding of radio wave propagation. He also helped in the development of the radar system. Later in his career, he investigated the origin and development of the atmosphere of the Earth. Earlier, he worked in the Airways division of the Bureau of the lighthouse for two years and returned at the US Bureau of Standards for another two years. There, he studied the ionosphere using the radio-pulse transmission.

The First Total Solar Eclipse

The first total solar eclipse was recorded by the Chinese in 780 BC. From the ancient city of Ugarit, Syria, a clay tablet was retrieved that gave the oldest eclipse record.

First Canadian Nuclear Power Plant

The first electricity from nuclear fission in Canada was generated at the Nuclear Power Demonstration reactor in 1962. It powered the Ontario power grid. Its design and development were done by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and the reactor was fuelled with natural uranium. Heavy water was used as the moderator and coolant.
